Home Filters 101

Filters are silent ninjas working behind the scenes to keep your air clean, your appliances running smoothly, and your family healthy. In this guide, we break down the most common filters found in a home, how often they should be replaced, and some bonus filters you might not even know you need.

1. HVAC/Furnace Filters

What they do: Trap dust, allergens, and debris to improve indoor air quality and protect your HVAC system.

How often to replace:

  • Fiberglass filters: Every 30 days

  • Pleated filters: Every 60-90 days

  • HEPA/MERV 13+: Every 6-12 months

Pro tip: If you have pets, allergies, or live in a dusty area, check more frequently.

2. Refrigerator Water Filter

Purpose: Provides clean drinking water and ice.

How often to replace: Every 6 months, or according to manufacturer guidelines.

3. Kitchen & Bathroom Exhaust Filters

Kitchen range hood:

  • Metal mesh: Wash monthly

  • Charcoal: Replace every 3-6 months

Bathroom fan: Typically, this won't have a replaceable filter, but your vents covers should be cleaned every few months.

4. Dryer Lint Filter

Purpose: Prevents fire hazards by trapping lint.

Maintenance: Clean after every load; deep clean every few months.

5. Water Filters (Whole House, Under-Sink, Pitchers)

Whole-house: Every 3-6 months

Under-sink/faucet: Every 2-6 months

Pitcher (e.g., Brita): Every 2 months or 40 gallons

6. Dishwasher Filter

Purpose: Captures food particles to prevent clogs and odors.

Maintenance: Clean monthly.
