Filters are silent ninjas working behind the scenes to keep your air clean, your appliances running smoothly, and your family healthy. In this guide, we break down the most common filters found in a home, how often they should be replaced, and some bonus filters you might not even know you need.
1. HVAC/Furnace Filters
What they do: Trap dust, allergens, and debris to improve indoor air quality and protect your HVAC system.
How often to replace:
Fiberglass filters: Every 30 days
Pleated filters: Every 60–90 days
HEPA/MERV 13+: Every 6–12 months
Pro tip: If you have pets, allergies, or live in a dusty area, check more frequently.
2. Refrigerator Water Filter
Purpose: Provides clean drinking water and ice.
How often to replace: Every 6 months, or according to manufacturer guidelines.
3. Kitchen & Bathroom Exhaust Filters
Kitchen range hood:
Metal mesh: Wash monthly
Charcoal: Replace every 3–6 months
Bathroom fan: Typically, this won’t have a replaceable filter, but your vents covers should be cleaned every few months.
4. Dryer Lint Filter
Purpose: Prevents fire hazards by trapping lint.
Maintenance: Clean after every load; deep clean every few months.
5. Water Filters (Whole House, Under-Sink, Pitchers)
Whole-house: Every 3–6 months
Under-sink/faucet: Every 2–6 months
Pitcher (e.g., Brita): Every 2 months or 40 gallons
6. Dishwasher Filter
Purpose: Captures food particles to prevent clogs and odors.
Maintenance: Clean monthly.

Quartz sleeves: Clean every 6 months
Toilet Fill Valve Filters
Clean annually if dealing with sediment or discoloration.
Central Vacuum Filters
Clean or replace every 3–6 months
Range Hood Charcoal Filters (Ventless Systems)
Replace every 3–6 months
